Nvidia's GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs, built on the "Ada Lovelace" architecture, are extremely impressive (and expensive) in bothdesktop computerselaptops. The top dog in the pile, the GeForce RTX 4090 delivers premium frame rates and is more efficient at advanced ray tracing lighting and image sharpening DLSS than anyone else. They share a name, but are they really the same? how closeIt isdesktop and laptop versions of the RTX 4090 GPU against each other, exactly? The difference between Nvidia's full and mobile GPUs of the same name has varied over the years, but across nearly every generation, it's safe to say that desktop graphics cards have always had a clear advantage. They are much larger, actively cooled, housed inside a desktop case with much more thermal headroom than a laptop chassis, and run at higher power. GPU performance and laptop cooling technology have come a long way, but ultimately, you can't beat thermodynamics.

These clear and fundamental differences don't change the fact that both are based on the same architecture and sold under the RTX 4090 name. It's easy for consumers to make assumptions about how performance translates between form factors or, for the less tech savvy , simply ignore the above factors and make assumptions based on the name alone.
We don't typically put our laptop and desktop systems through the same exact benchmark tests or compare them in a graph - buyers often want to buy a new laptop or upgrade their desktop, not another one after all.

To fairly judge how profoundly two GPUs of the same name differ here in 2023, we used the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition GPU and an unlimited GeForce RTX 4090 as portable as possible (within the dreadedMSI Titan GT77) through the same benchmarks and compared the results. Let's set the stage, look at their technical differences, and then dive into the results.
What's in a name? Resize GeForce RTX 4090
I mentioned this above, but the most obvious difference is size. Desktop GPUs, especially high-end models like the RTX 4090, are pretty physical objects before you even consider the technology inside. Desktop chips are housed in large, thick boards that today can be a foot or more in length, while mobile GPUs are thin chips that need to fit inside a laptop just like CPUs. The RTX 4090 Founders Edition, for example, is 12 inches long and is considered a triple-width GPU – bigger hardware than any laptop ever could.have hopeto contain.

In this specific case, another important differentiator comes into play: despite the common name, the mobile RTX 4090 actually runs on the same AD103 silicon as the desktop RTX 4080 graphics card,noRTX 4090. Mobile and desktop GPUs share the RTX 4090 branding, as do the top models in their respective stacks, but they don't use the same silicon. This has a measurable impact on performance. And that means the RTX 4090 notebook has more in common, in terms of physical specs, with the desktop.Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080GPU of the graphics card that shares its name.
Here's a look at these important differences in the table below. For the desktop card, these specs are for the RTX 4090 Founders Edition. For the mobile RTX 4090, I use the MSI Titan GT77 as a test laptop. The specifications of this GPU in other notebooks may vary depending on the power, which I will discuss below.
A big variable here is "card wattage" as it relates to notebook implementations of Nvidia's GPUs. A laptop manufacturer might configure the mobile version of the RTX 4090 for arangepower supply, depending on the laptop in question and its thermal limits. On the desktop, a similar problem concerns individual graphics card manufacturers. Nvidia manufactures Founders Edition (FE) graphics cards, which serve as the "reference" or standard version of the card. Partner manufacturers - Asus, Gigabyte and MSI, to name a few - can take these reference designs and build their own versions of the card around Nvidia's chips, often with more fans, with higher speeds, equipped with more powerful heatsinks. and bulky, or one or another combination thereof. Different cards have different power, performance and price requirements. Let's just look at the Founders Edition card as a secure baseline.
Discrepancies on the portable side tend to be larger. You don't have a physical or standalone graphics card to buy as the GPU is always an integral part of a laptop. But laptop makers can implement the chip with different thermal constraints and power consumption levels. They are largely related to the size and cooling capacity of a laptop's body; therefore manufacturers provide the same GPU with varying wattage for different laptops. In other words, an RTX 4090 laptop chip in one laptop doesn't necessarily perform the same as an RTX 4090 chip in another. Don't worry about the difference between a laptop and a desktop!
For example, Asus chose to implement the RTX 4080 in itsROG Strix Scar 18laptop at 150 watts (up to 175 W, including boost), but another laptop manufacturer might cap it at 125 W, capping your power cap. Nvidia lists the unamplified power range for the RTX 4090 notebook chip from 80W to 150W. You'll see this kind of variation all the time with laptop GPUs, which makes first-hand research extremely important. the GPU name alone does not indicate an accurate performance expectation.
GeForce RTX 4090 Test: RTX 4090 desktop vs laptop clash
As mentioned, I'll be using the Founders Edition card as my basic desktop expectation for the RTX 4090, along with the RTX 4090 running on the MSI Titan GT77. GPU desktop tested on our graphics card testbed, which runs on stockIntel Core i9-12900KCorsair Hydro Series H100X 240mm Liquid Cooled Processor in aAsus ROG Maximus Z690 Heromotherboard.
The Titan GT77 review unit I tested ran an RTX 4090 at 150 W (up to 175 W with boost),Processador Intel Core i9-13980HXand 64 GB of memory. (Yes, the processor in the GPU testbed is a generation behind the laptop, as this test build was the standard at the time of testing the RTX 4090 and remains what we use for testing desktop GPUs. The effect of any CPU throttling should be limited in this context.) The Titan GT77 isn't the best RTX 4090 for mobile - there are some larger 18-inch systems out there, and they can push framerates a bit higher. But this is a broadly representative high-end laptop that allows for the most graphics horsepower possible.

We had a lot more to say about the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition and the Lovelace architecture, so instead of repeating it here, I encourage you to read the details.in this reviewif you want to know more.
With all that established, the exact difference in performance between laptop and desktop variants of the "same" GPU has always been different on each generation of Nvidia's platform. The launch of the RTX series and advanced ray tracing lighting technology in particular has created a whole new world of possible power requirements, and desktops have a lot more headroom than laptops. This made it even more difficult to compare them head-to-head, even though notebook GPUs had come close in performance prior to that point. (At the time of the GeForce GTX 10 series, GPUs like the desktop GeForce GTX 1080 and its mobile GTX 1080 were close in performance.)
Now let's go to the benchmark test suite. For these results, I've also included our benchmarks for the GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition desktop card. After all, if the mobile GeForce RTX 4090 is based on the same silicon as the desktop RTX 4080, it's equally interesting to see how closely these two perform. Seeing how the RTX 4090 name translates is the focus here, but the shared silicon between the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 notebook chips will shine a light on what was lost in the different form factors.
High resolution and DLSS test
Much of the strength of the RTX 40 series lies in its DLSS efficiency, which theoretically significantly improves frame rates at demanding high resolutions. This has been proven with most of these GPUs and the results here prove this fact. Below are the results for two modern DLSS-equipped titles at maximum settings with DLSS disabled and enabled at various resolutions.
These games behave differently and DLSS affects them differently, but you still see a pattern across these titles and GPUs. It's not surprising to note that, on average, they generally ranked as you'd expect - the desktop RTX 4090 was fastest, followed by the RTX 4080 and finally the mobile RTX 4090 - but the degrees of difference are interesting.
One exception is F1 22 with DLSS disabled - the mobile RTX 4090 was faster than the desktop RTX 4080 at all three test resolutions. However, it couldn't come close to its desktop counterpart outside of 1080p, clocking in at 32 frames per second (fps) at 1440p and 17fps at 4K. Enabling DLSS made it even worse - the mobile RTX 4090 posted 98fps at 4K, with the desktop version hitting 147fps.
At 4K, 98fps is respectable and playable, but it's still a big gap. The desktop RTX 4080 was between the two at 4K, but the laptop RTX 4090 was slightly better at 1440p. This will vary by game. But in this title, the mobile RTX 4090 far outperforms the desktop RTX 4080, falling well behind its desktop sibling.

5 Ways to Improve PC Gaming with Nvidia GeForce Experience
How to play classic PC games
The caveat of game-to-game variation is important because you can see this scenario reversed immediately in Guardians of the Galaxy. The mobile RTX 4090 can't even keep up with the RTX 4080 and has dozens of frames less than the desktop RTX 4090. Again, DLSS makes these titles playable at maximum settings with this GPU, and those frame rates probably sound decent to most mainstream gamers. But for fans of high-end shopping, the RTX 4090 laptop's performance in this game doesn't live up to desktop expectations when hearing the name "RTX 4090".
AAA game test
This is a collection of titles that, while not all extremely new, represent a decent mix of genres and graphical fidelity in the modern market. We tested them at three different resolutions, all at maximum settings.
DLSS efficiency may be one of the key features of the RTX 40 series, but with that removed you can get a better sense of raw performance here: the RTX 4090 desktop card isverymore powerful than the corresponding mobile phone. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the most visually demanding title here, and the difference in 4K in particular is significant.
The desktop RTX 4090 is also much more powerful than the RTX 4080, but the lack of mobile RTX 4090 here makes it feel like a GPU much further down the stack. In practice, this is truly the mobile GPUIt isin terms of performance. The numbers show that the RTX 4090 name doesn't guarantee a certain level of power wherever it appears.
In some cases, in these gaming tests, the mobile RTX 4090 sits relatively close to the desktop card, but overall frame rates drop to completely different levels. You're seeing gaps of up to 83fps at 4K in some of these games, and up to 67fps in some cases at 1440p. Not all games have as much swing, but the overall package remains the same. The performance delta isn't as great as with the RTX 4080, but the desktop card's inherent advantages remain there as well.
To highlight the difference in raw power, I also ran the mobile RTX 4090 through Futuremark's 3DMark Time Spy Extreme synthetic test...
It scored 10,622 points compared to the RTX 4090 FE's 19,264 points and the RTX 4080 FE's 17,672 points. There is no competition.
Verdict: There's power in a name, but don't confuse the RTX 4090 laptop with the desktop card
Ultimately, this is the reality of these results. Regardless of GPU names, mobile GPUs always have a power and heat disadvantage, and the performance delta you see here isn't surprising given the differences I described above. Hopefully this sheds some light on exactly how these variations in frame rates might look in practice. The mobile GeForce RTX 4090 is closer to the graphics card it shares an entry-level chip with (the RTX 4080) than the graphics card it shares a name with, but even then the mobile chip can't keep up.
That's not to say that it's deliberately misleading to name this mobile GPU an RTX 4090 - it represents the top-of-the-line GeForce RTX 40 lineup forspecifically laptops. If you want peak performance (and not necessarily value, as we've seen mobile RTX 4080 systems perform nearly as well), this is the GPU to get. But this is a misnomer as it is more a name for brand consistency than a hardware or performance guarantee. Laptops with the RTX 4090 GPU are for enthusiasts with deep pockets and offer perfectly smooth frame rates at the highest settings - the chip just doesn't live up to the raw performance set by its much more powerful desktop counterpart.
