Console address discovery
Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh provides the following consoles for viewing service mesh data:
Consola Kiali- Kiali is the management console for Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh.
console Jaeger- Jaeger is the management console for distributed detection of Red Hat OpenShift.
Consul Grafana- Grafana provides grid administrators with advanced queries and analysis of metrics and dashboards for Istio data. Optionally, Grafana can be used to analyze service mesh metrics.
Prometheus konsol- Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh uses Prometheus to store service telemetry information.
When you install the Service Mesh control layer, it automatically creates routes for each of the installed components. Once you get the route address, you can access the Kiali, Jaeger, Prometheus or Grafana console to view and manage your service network data.

Kiali Graph gives you a powerful visualization of your web traffic. The topology combines real-time query traffic with Istio configuration information to provide at-a-glance information about service mask behavior so you can quickly identify problems. Various graph types allow you to visualize traffic as a high-level service topology, a low-level workload topology, or an application-level topology.
There are many charts to choose from:
Ousage chartshows an aggregated workload for all apps with the same tag.
Oservice chartshows a node for each service in your grid, but excludes all applications and workloads from the graph. It provides top-notch visibility and aggregates all traffic for specified services.
OVersion usage chartshows a node for each version of an application. All versions of an application are bundled together.
Oworkload chartdisplays a node for each workload in your service network. This diagram does not require you to use application and version tags. If your app doesn't use version tags, use this scheme.
The graph nodes are decorated with a variety of information that indicate various routing options such as virtual services and service entries, as well as special configurations such as fault injection and switches. It can detect mTLS issues, latency issues, error traffic and much more. The chart is highly configurable, can display motion animations, and has powerful Find and Hide features.

Distributed detection
Distributed tracing is the process of monitoring the performance of individual services within an application by tracing the path of service calls to the application. Each time a user performs an action in an application, a request is made that may require multiple services to interact to produce a response. This request path is called a distributed transaction.
Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh uses Red Hat OpenShift distributed tracing to allow developers to see call flows within a microservice application.

Adjust the sampling rate
A trace is an execution path between services in the service mesh. A track consists of one or more openings. An interval is a logical unit of work that has a name, start time, and duration. The sampling frequency determines how many times a track is dropped.
By default, the Envoy proxy sampling rate is set to sample 100% of traces on the service network. A high sample rate uses cluster resources and performance, but is useful for debugging. Before deploying Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh to production, set the value to a lower percentage of traces. For example, definespecification.tracking.sampling
for100
to sample 1% of the tracks.
Configure the Envoy proxy sampling rate as a scaled integer representing 0.01% increments.
In a basic installation,specification.tracking.sampling
It's agreed10.000
, which samples 100% of the tracks. For example:
Set the value to 10 samples from 0.1% of tracks.
Set the value to 500 samples from 5% of the tracks.
The Envoy proxy sampling rate applies to applications that are available in a Service Mesh and use the Envoy proxy. This sampling rate determines how much data the Envoy proxy collects and tracks. Jaeger Remote Sample Rate applies to applications that are external to Service Mesh and do not use the Envoy proxy, such as a database. This sampling rate determines how much data the distributed sensor system collects and stores. For more information, seeDistributed detection configuration options. |

FAQs
What is the value of a service mesh? ›
A service mesh helps organizations run microservices at scale by providing: A more flexible release process (for example, support for canary deployments, A/B testing, and blue/green deployments) Availability and resilience (for example, setup retries, failovers, circuit breakers, and fault injection)
What's a service mesh and why do I need one? ›A service mesh enables developers to separate and manage service-to-service communications in a dedicated infrastructure layer. As the number of microservices involved with an application increases, so do the benefits of using a service mesh to manage and monitor them.
What is an example of a service mesh in Kubernetes? ›What is Istio Kubernetes Service Mesh? Istio is an open source, Kubernetes service mesh example that has become the service mesh of choice for many major tech businesses such as Google, IBM, and Lyft. Istio shares the data plane and control plane that all service meshes feature, and is often made up of Envoy proxies.
What are the capabilities of a service mesh? ›A service mesh is a dedicated infrastructure layer that you can add to your applications. It allows you to transparently add capabilities like observability, traffic management, and security, without adding them to your own code.
What are the two most important components of service mesh? ›A service mesh consists of two elements: the data plane and the control plane. As the names suggest, the data plane handles the actual forwarding of traffic, whereas the control plane provides the configuration and coordination.
What is service mesh in simple terms? ›A Service Mesh is a configurable infrastructure layer that makes communication between microservice applications possible, structured, and observable. A service Mesh also monitors and manages network traffic between microservices, redirecting and granting or limiting access as needed to optimize and protect the system.
Do we really need service mesh? ›In conclusion, a Service Mesh is not a must for every Cloud-Native Kubernetes-based deployment. It does have a lot of benefits and features out of the box but comes with its own set of challenges that you have to take into consideration before using a Mesh.
What is the difference between microservices and service mesh? ›Microservices have specific security needs, such as protection against third-party attacks, flexible access controls, mutual Transport Layer Security (TLS) and auditing tools. Service Mesh offers comprehensive security that gives operators the ability to address all of these issues.
What is the difference between API gateway and service mesh? ›The API gateway is the component responsible for routing external communications. For example, the API gateway handles chatbot connections, purchase orders and visits to specific pages. Conversely, the service mesh is responsible for internal communications in the system.
What is the difference between Kubernetes and service mesh? ›Kubernetes is essentially about application lifecycle management through declarative configuration, while a service mesh is essentially about providing inter-application traffic, security management and observability.
Is service mesh a load balancer? ›
In Mesh, a load balancer is the same as a reverse proxy and is configured to have multiple endpoints for a server. It distributes load of incoming client requests based various scheduling algorithms, for example, round robin, weighted least request, random, ring-hash etc.
What is service mesh also known as? ›A service mesh is a mechanism for managing communications between the various individual services that make up modern applications in a microservice-based system.
What are the three mesh components? ›A 3D mesh model is a collection of vertices, edges, and faces that together form a three-dimensional object. The vertices are the coordinates in three-dimensional space, the edges each connect two adjacent vertices, and the faces (also called polygons ) enclose the edges to form the surface of the object.
What are examples of service meshes? ›- Istio. Istio is an extensible open-source service mesh built on Envoy, allowing teams to connect, secure, control, and observe services. ...
- Linkerd. ...
- Consul Connect. ...
- Kuma. ...
- Maesh. ...
- ServiceComb-mesher. ...
- Network Service Mesh (NSM) ...
- OpenShift Service Mesh by Red Hat.
Some of the drawbacks of service meshes are: The use of a service mesh can increase runtime instances. Communication involves an additional step—the service call first has to run through a sidecar proxy. Service meshes don't support integration with other systems or services.
What are the 4 pillars of data mesh? ›Data Mesh is founded in four principles: "domain-driven ownership of data", "data as a product", "self-serve data platform" and a "federated computational governance".
What are the two types of mesh? ›- Full mesh topology. Every device in the network is connected to all other devices in the network. ...
- Partial mesh topology. Only some of the devices in the network are connected to multiple other devices in the network.
Load balancing.
A service mesh implements more sophisticated Layer 7 (application layer) load balancing, with richer algorithms and more powerful traffic management. Load‑balancing parameters can be modified via API, making it possible to orchestrate blue‑green or canary deployments.
Service Mesh Telemetry
Both track requests and response codes for services through their proxies. However, tracing requires additional instrumentation in your application to support the propagation of trace context.
A service mesh handles internal traffic between services inside a cluster, and the proxy is deployed alongside the application. In contrast, an API gateway handles external traffic coming to a cluster — often referred to as north/south communication.
What is service mesh API? ›
The API gateway operates at the application level, while the service mesh operates at the infrastructure level. An API gateway stands between the user and internal applications logic, while the service mesh stands between the internal microservices.
How do you implement a service mesh? ›To implement a service mesh, you need to deploy the control plane components to a machine in the cluster, inject the data plane proxy alongside each service replica and configure their behavior using policies. In a multi-cluster or multi-zone deployment, a global control plane is used to coordinate across clusters.
Why do I need a data mesh? ›Data meshes provide a solution to the shortcomings of data lakes by allowing greater autonomy and flexibility for data owners, facilitating greater data experimentation and innovation while lessening the burden on data teams to field the needs of every data consumer through a single pipeline.
Is service mesh a middleware? ›Dedicated infrastructure layer: A service mesh is not designed to solve business issues, but is a dedicated infrastructure layer (middleware).
What is difference between REST API service and microservice? ›Microservices are the blocks of your application and perform different services, while REST APIs work as the glue or the bridge that integrates these separate microservices. APIs can be made up, wholly or partially, out of microservices.
Is service mesh a platform? ›Service Mesh Platforms Overview
Service meshes are an infrastructure layer within an application or system that uses the Kubernetes container management platform. They allow microservices to communicate with each other within the application itself.
So, how do API gateways and load balancers differ? The main difference between these two services is that API gateways provide secure access to backend services, whereas load balancers distribute traffic between multiple servers.
What is REST API vs API gateway? ›REST APIs support more features than HTTP APIs, while HTTP APIs are designed with minimal features so that they can be offered at a lower price. Choose REST APIs if you need features such as API keys, per-client throttling, request validation, AWS WAF integration, or private API endpoints.
What is service mesh in Devops? ›A service mesh is a dedicated infrastructure layer that enables communication between microservices in a distributed application.
What is the fastest service mesh? ›Linkerd is said to be the lightest and fastest service mesh as of now. It makes running Cloud-Native services easier, more reliable, safer, and more visible by providing observability for all Microservices running in the cluster. All of this without requiring any Microservices source code changes.
What are the three types of service objects supported by Kubernetes? ›
- ClusterIP. Exposes a service which is only accessible from within the cluster.
- NodePort. Exposes a service via a static port on each node's IP.
- LoadBalancer. Exposes the service via the cloud provider's load balancer.
- ExternalName.
- Apache ServiceComb.
- Network Service Mesh (NSM)
- Kiali Operator.
- NGINX Service Mesh.
- Aspen Mesh.
- Open Service Mesh (OSM)
- Grey Matter.
- OpenShift Service Mesh.
Elastic Load Balancing supports the following types of load balancers: Application Load Balancers, and Network Load Balancers.
Which load balancer is mostly used? ›Round-robin load balancing is the simplest and most commonly-used load balancing algorithm. Client requests are distributed to application servers in simple rotation.
What is service mesh in microservices? ›In a service mesh, requests are routed between microservices through proxies in their own infrastructure layer. For this reason, individual proxies that make up a service mesh are sometimes called "sidecars," since they run alongside each service, rather than within them.
What is the difference between mesh and network? ›The biggest difference between Wi-Fi and mesh networks is that with Wi-Fi, a traditional router acts as a centralized access point, while mesh networks are decentralized. Traditional Wi-Fi has single network connections where requests from devices are granted permission to connect to a central router.
What is the difference between router and mesh system? ›What is the difference between mesh Wi-Fi routers and other Wi-Fi routers? Unlike a traditional router which broadcasts its signal from a single device, a mesh router emits a signal from multiple units strategically placed around your home.
Is mesh also a router? ›A mesh network is a group of connectivity devices, such as Wi-Fi routers that act as a single network, so there are multiple sources of connectivity around your house instead of just a single router.
How do you identify a mesh? ›- To identify the meshes and label these mesh currents in either clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
- To observe the amount of current that flows through each element in terms of mesh current.
- Writing the mesh equations to all meshes using Kirchhoff's voltage law and then Ohm's law.
Patch and Element Levels used in manual meshing | |

3 | 23 = 8 rectangles on each side, 64 rectangles per surface. |
4 | 24 = 16 rectangles on each side, 256 rectangles per surface. |
What is a mesh data structure? ›
The FV mesh data structure is extremely simple and intuitive. It typically consists of an ordered array of vertices, and a list of faces. Each face is a list of the indices of the vertices that form its boundary. In this data structure, edges are implicit in the sequence of verts around the face.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a mesh network? ›- Advantage #1: Prevents Downtime. ...
- Advantage #2: Easy to Install. ...
- Advantage #3: Scales Well. ...
- Advantage #4: Multi-Device Handling is Top-Notch. ...
- Disadvantage #1: Alternative Solutions May Be Better for Some People. ...
- Disadvantage #2: Unattainable for Low-Broadband Regions.
If you are deploying only a base Kubernetes cluster without a Service Mesh, you will run into the following issues: There is no security between services. Tracing a service latency problem is a severe challenge. Load balancing is limited.
Do I really need a service mesh? ›In conclusion, a Service Mesh is not a must for every Cloud-Native Kubernetes-based deployment. It does have a lot of benefits and features out of the box but comes with its own set of challenges that you have to take into consideration before using a Mesh.
What is the advantage of Istio service mesh? ›Istio is an open source service mesh that helps organizations run distributed, microservices-based apps anywhere. Why use Istio? Istio enables organizations to secure, connect, and monitor microservices, so they can modernize their enterprise apps more swiftly and securely.
What is the use of service mesh in microservices? ›A service mesh helps head off problems by automatically routing requests from one service to the next while optimizing how all these moving parts work together. The service mesh is a dedicated, configurable infrastructure layer built into an app that can document how different parts of an app's microservices interact.
Is Istio a service mesh or API gateway? ›One of the most important examples of popular service meshes is Istio, CNCF project, and Linkerd. And keep in mind that you need API gateways to use Service mesh because API Gateways overlap with service mesh for functionality.
What is the difference between VirtualService and Gateway in Istio? ›Gateway allows external traffic into Service Mesh. It just specifies the protocol (HTTP/HTTPS) and the ports (80/443) that are exposed. VirtualService maps the traffic from Gateway to Kubernetes Services inside the ServiceMesh.
Is service mesh an anti pattern? ›The Service Mesh, the topic of this microservice anti-pattern, is the amalgamation of all the anti-patterns to date. It contains elements of calls in series, fuses and fan out. As such, it follows the rules and availability problems of each of those patterns and should be avoided at all costs.
