Along with naming the best moments and performances of the year, there were several not-so-stellar moments, with characters, plots and more that received the dubious honor of some of our "worst".

A note:In our opinion, 2022 was not a remarkable year for soap operas. There was sometimes lackluster and lazy storytelling between the four long-running series, and for that reason our annual Kudo Festival is not nominated for the Best Soap Opera of the Year award.

While we recognize that many of you have your own views and decisions and may disagree or agree with ours, we encourage you to share your opinions with us as well. Above all, respect the opinions of others as you want them to respect yours.

Laughter, thrills and wacky or wacky surprises, DAYS continues to be the most entertaining soap opera with its "go ahead" tagline and over-the-top storylines. It would be nice to see him infused with a little more emotional heart in 2023.

It was difficult for us to find a story or two throughout the year that made us want to tune in every day. The show will celebrate its golden anniversary in 2023 and we hope exciting stories will be written about the strengths of its all-star cast in the future.

SOAP THAT NEEDS MORE BALANCE

Hospital General

When GH is good, it's the absolute best drama on daytime television, bar none. The cast is sensational, the emotional episodes provide Emmy-winning material for the show, and some of the stories have sets involving many on-screen characters. On the other hand, many stories happen simultaneously, often with characters that don't mean much to us and often go nowhere. With a few adjustments, GH will celebrate its 60th birthday in 2023.

BEST LIMITED SERIES

Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem Chapter 2

This was a perfect five-episode arc, narrated with story nods, clever writing, and appearances from Kristian Alfonso, Peter Reckell, Steve Burton, and Miranda Wilson to boot.

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS

Maura West - Ava Jerome - Hospital General

Any year that Maura West is involved in a top story is always a smart move. In 2022, Ava took an emotional toll and fought as only she can. West's scenes - when she found out her husband Nikolas had slept with his mortal enemy Esme Prince, his confrontation with the bad girl and the aftermath shows us why West is in a league of his own.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A STORY

Melissa Claire Egan – The Chelsea Down – The Young and the Restless

This story was very close to many and perfectly narrated by Y&R's Melissa Claire Egan. It made sense that Chelsea would lose all hope and find no way to move on after all of her past transgressions and failures and her complex relationship with her sons: Johnny and Connor. As Chelsea rose to the roof to contemplate ending her life, and then its aftermath, it could be argued that Egan will take home Emmy gold in 2023.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED ROLE

Alison Sweeney - Sami Brady - Days of Our Lives

DAYS head writer Ron Carlivati ​​has always found the sweet spot in writing Sami and giving Alison Sweeney material to sink her teeth into every time she returns to her home on the soap opera. In 2022, after her marriage to Lucas explodes and the truth is exposed, Sami finally finds her sister Belle in EJ's bed. This time Sami leaves Salem, she defends herself with limited theatrics, telling EJ, "I've been playing ping pong between you and Lucas for almost two decades and I'm done. . You're not worth the gunpowder to blow up. I want to point out that if you hadn't believed his lies, we would be together now. Thank God it happened the way it happened so I could learn my lesson. 'Cause I can't even count the different ways you found to break my heart. So I'm done. Good luck with Bella or whoever comes after her. I hope you make each other miserable. I had it. With you. With this place. With all that!" And with that, Sami leaves Salem and leaves Salem again. BRAVO to Sweeney!

BEST SINGLE PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A STORY

2022 has also brought us some harrowing performances from multiple actresses in a single performance within an episode or short arc. Here are some that stand out from the rest:

Mishael Morgan – Amanda se encuentra con Devon namens Abby – The Young and the Restless

The 2022 Daytime Emmy-winning leading lady returned to Y&R to wrap up her story, and she did it with heartbreaking emotion and heartbreak as only Mishael Morgan can.

Sal Stowers - Lani deixa Salem - Days of Our Lives

Sometimes we save the best for last, and in the case of Sal Stowers, he gave it his all in his final episode as Lani said goodbye to his family before serving his sentence.

Sharon Case - Sharon finds out Rey is dead - The Young and the Restless

When Sharon's intuition tells her that Rey is dead and she learns the fateful news from Nick, she provides Case with a canvas to depict Sharon's devastation. The trouble was, Case didn't have anything else to do on screen for the rest of the year.

Finola Hughes – Anna ve morir a Peter – Hospital General

Anna blamed herself for Peter's existence in the first place, but fittingly, when the boy's time on this earth ended, this super-spy Devane didn't call the medics, but instead ensured his evil reign ended. In the capable hands of Finola Hughes, the scene was mesmerizing.

Marci Miller - Chad Says Goodbye to Abigail at Her Grave - Days of our Lives

As Abigail visits Chad at his grave, she gives Chabby fans a fitting farewell to a DAYS couple. Miller's low-key performance as Abigail was the perfect antithesis to Billy Flynn's grieving husband.

BEST OVERALL ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Kelly Thiebaud – Britt Westbourne – Hospital General

This is the second year in a row for Kelly to receive our highest honor for supporting actress. In 2022, the story got even more poignant as Britt's battle with HD progressed, and as the end of the year brings her departure from the show, we're reminded of this actress' power. Kelly can handle anything: playing hardball, desperation, devotion, humor, darkness, imperfection, and most importantly, humanity. Thiebaud made GH a better show every time he appeared on screen.

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR

Billy Flynn - Chad DiMera - Days of Our Lives

Could there be anything more heartbreaking than Chad avenging Abigail's death, confronting her killer (Clyde) and reuniting with his beloved wife at her grave? Flynn was so masterful in these scenes and throughout the journey of the grieving husband trying to identify his wife's killer. Billy's performance should earn him some Emmy love in 2023.

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE BY A SUPPORTING ACTOR

Nicholas Alexander Chavez – Spencer Cassadine – Krankenhausgeneral

The best thing about Nick Chavez's work is that it is never overstated, often understated. However, when Spencer explodes and lets her emotions run wild, it's pure soap opera gold. Look no further when Spencer finds out that her own father slept with his so-called girlfriend. Let's not forget when Spencer risked everything to save Trina's life in court and ended up in jail for it...or how he just can't step out of the way and admit what he feels and who he loves. Chávez is a real discovery for GH. Now the trick…. How long can they keep this dude going when the sky's the limit for his burgeoning acting career?

BEST SINGLE PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A STORY

Jason Thompson – Billy salva a vida de Chelsea – The Young and the Restless

Y&R used one of its best actors in a story about depression and suicide attempts, with Billy being the only one who found Chelsea on the verge of ending her life. What followed were scenes of an insecure and defenseless man trying to do the right thing. Thompson's performance was honest and raw, and for anyone who was on either side of a suicide attempt, it showed viewers how a split-second decision can save the life of someone you love or care about.

Maurice Benard - Sonny has a manic episode in front of Nina - General Hospital

Earlier this year, as Sonny regroups at Port Charles, he stops taking his bipolar medication and it is Nina who witnesses his erratic and emotional behavior. Finally, the two sit in silence while he rests his head on her shoulder. When Sonny realizes he needs help, he is vulnerable. It reminds us that given the material, Benard is the best actor possible.

Tanner Novlan – Sheila tem Finn sequestrado – The Bold and the Beautiful

In one of the year's most shocking twists, Finn turns out to be alive and being secretly cared for by his adoptive mother, Li. It wasn't until Sheila found out about his whereabouts that the film "Misery" evolved, in which Sheila half-tortured her biological son before escaping from captivity. Meanwhile, Finn tries to get away from her so he can reunite with his wife Steffy, who he believes is dead. Novlan showed up for it, proving that not only is she another hot soap opera, but she can act as well.

BEST PERFORMANCE OF A LONG TIME Veteran

Kathrine Kelly Lang – Brooke Forrester – The Bold and the Beautiful

B&B put Brooke to the test in 2022! The 35-year veteran of the series had two stories blaming her for something she didn't do! From the New Year's Eve party with Deacon... to the CPS call from the voice changer app, Brooke cried all year and wondered how this could have happened to her. Remember: A) Sheila switched the champagne bottles so Brooke would think she was drinking non-alcoholic champagne when in fact she was drinking real champagne and kissing Deacon. Brooke is an alcoholic from the start. B) Thomas pretends to be Brooke calling CPS so Ridge thinks she gave up on her son and he leaves her for Taylor. Lang brings it up all the time, and it would be nice for her to get an Emmy nomination in 2023, but sometimes the storylines she's dealing with are just too long and ridiculous. STREAM FOR FREE! Hopefully 2023 will give the character a chance to find her center without machinations and without the need for a man, especially Ridge!

The biggest DOFUSES

Soap opera writers really coddle some of these key characters in their favorite soap operas.

Nikolas Cassadine, Hospital General

Number one has to be Nikolas Cassadine, he's become the ultimate jerk. Sleeping with your son's girlfriend? Lying about an affair with Elizabeth? Lock Esme up in Wyndemere? This guy used to be so smart and cunning, and this character has hit rock bottom.

Jack Abbott, The Young and the Restless

Do you have the great Peter Bergman and make a fool of Jack Abbott too? Is he so dumb that he would just fall for the questionable Diane Jenkins? The audience at home feels like Ashley! Every time he sees his brother staring at Diane or defending her, he gets a bad taste in his mouth combined with a look of contempt.

Ridge Forrester, The Brave and the Beautiful

We have no sympathy or empathy for Ridge Forrester. He can't even tell Brooke why he's so upset about leaving her and he runs back to Taylor and then explodes. This character needs a serious makeover, or even better, deep therapy.

BEST CHILD ACTOR

Henry Joseph Samiri - Douglas Forrester - The Bold and the Handsome

Hail Douglas! Henry Joseph Samiri is a real insider tip for B&Bs. He was great earlier in the year when "drunk" Granny Brooke kissed Santa, and even better later when he revealed the truth about his dad and his voice-changing shenanigans to ruin Granny Brooke's marriage to Ridge. Congratulations.

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Sheila had an amazing year in history, she shot her son and his wife, somehow survived it all, wore a wig and prosthetics, tricked Deacon into letting her stay with him, cut off her toe, her fights with Li, his apparent alliance with Bill , and more. Yes, B&B let Sheila get away with EVERYTHING, but Brown is so good in the role that she has to be commended for making Sheila so pathological that we can't wait to see how she gets away with putting her life behind to spend the scenes. Time.

Alley Mills – Heather Webber – Generalkrankenhaus

Alley Mills was a surprise recast for Heather Webber's Mad Town when Robin Mattson was unavailable to reprise her role as GH. Mills reinvigorated Heather and made us count the minutes until she popped back onto our screen to cause even more trouble. Mills transitioned from crazy Pam and her lemon bars at the B&B to the latest "Cray-Cray" as Heather on GH.

BEST MALE STAGE THIEF

Greg Rikaart - Leo Stark - Days of Our Lives

To say Days loves Leo and Greg Rikaart enjoys playing the role is an understatement. This is a perfect combination of insightful writing and the right actor to make what's on the page even more entertaining. Rikaart is so amazing in the role that Leo has become the gift Salem keeps giving!

It was nice to finally have Emma Samms back as Holly Sutton for a limited season. His comeback worked best when he appeared in scenes alongside Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio). When it came time for Holly to run off and finish the story, Robert and Holly kissed, he took her Ice Princess diamond necklace and GH fans got a chance to reminisce a bit. Well played.

Brook Lynn ist Bailey Louise und Maxie – Hospital General

When Peter finally died and Maxie was able to safely raise their son, Brook Lynn felt it was time to bring him back to his birth mother. In a heartbreaking scene, Brook Lynn brings the girl back to Maxie. Beautiful work by Amanda Setton and Kirsten Storms.

Taylor chose Ridge in Aspen - The Bold and the Beautiful

When Taylor ran away from Ridge in the Aspen Mountains, was she really running or was she waiting for him to catch up? Eventually he does, the romance begins and it doesn't work out.

THE WORST MURDER MYSTERY

Abigail Murder Mystery - Days of Our Lives

It was a huge disappointment that after all the suspects and months of false leads it turned out that Clyde Weston was Abby's killer. Clyde's justification for being the killer was the weakest part of the story.

BEST SETBACK

DAYS celebrates its 57th anniversary by revisiting Julie's shoplifting plot in its debut episode

It was a very smart move to use footage from the 1965 pilot episode of DAYS with the original Julie, so 57 years later Shawn arrests the adult Julie for shoplifting.

BEST RETURN

Susan Walters - Diane Jenkins - The Young and the Restless

Although the story got longer, it was great to see Susan Walters again as the troublemaker Diane JenkinsThe young and the restlesswhen the show decided to "bring the character back from the dead".

WORST ISSUE

Rena Sofer as Quinn - The Bold and the Beautiful

After all the preparations for Quinn and Carter finally dating, we have received news that Rena Sofer has made the decision to leave the series. Instead of creating a proper exit story or even ONE scene with her, viewers find out that she has disappeared and her best friend Shauna arrives and reveals that Quinn has left Carter. We understand that soap opera contracts require quick changes, but what better way to handle this change? Maybe even a Facetime video of Quinn explaining herself to Carter? Just say'.

BEST COUPLE IN TRAINING

Sprina-Hospital General

Spencer and Trina crossed the starsHospital GeneralThey are all. In this case, GH wrote the story, building the suspense and keeping viewers waiting and hoping and wishing that the two would finally have their romance, or even how about a big kiss? Stay tuned in 2023.

Anna and Valentin – General Hospital

They're sexy, sophisticated and now all we have to do is see them in a high stakes drama where they meet again against all odds. 'Vanna' captured the imagination of GH viewers with its portrayal of maturing love, played by the always excellent Finola Hughes and James Patrick Stuart.

The worst couple

Austin y Maxie – General Hospital

It doesn't work on so many levels. Bring Maxie back to Spinelli and find an actress (sorry Kelly Thiebaud left the show) who can hold her own against Roger Howarth and we're worried.

They've monopolized so much airtime and we don't care. It's been the Ashland and Victoria Show for so many months and our heads were spinning.

Nancy and Clyde - Days of Our Lives

This was embarrassing for Nancy's character, not only because she was cheated on by her longtime husband Craig, who seems to have suppressed his sexuality of being with men all these years, but later episodes find her keeping up with Clyde's murder. Rough.

MOST TORTURED CHARACTER

Sasha Gilmore - Hospital General

Losing her baby, battling addiction, losing her husband, battling addiction hasn't been a good year for poor Sasha at GH. Can a woman go two days without a misfortune in her life? Kudos to Sofia Mattsson for portraying Sasha's inner pain, but come on! Sasha needs a bright spot in her life right now, or at least a trip around the world where all expenses are paid!

CHARACTER THAT NEEDS BETTER WRITING

dr Austin Gatlin-Holt - Hospital General

GH doesn't seem to figure out what she's up to with Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt, and beloved fan favorite Roger Howarth languishes in the role. Is Austin a nice guy? A really bad guy? The story with "cousin" Mason was complicated and hopefully in 2023 we can get a clear direction for this character..

BEST REVELATION

Tabyana Ali – General of the Hospital

It wasn't an easy feat slipping into Sydney Mikayla's shoes, but Tabyana Ali brought her own style to Trina and we all fell in love with her for it. From her emotional courtroom drama to her lust for Spencer, the death of her boyfriend Rory, and everything in between, Tabyana is a rising star.

BEST TRIANGLE

Allie/Chanel/Johnny - Days of Our Lives

Talk about breaking old soap tropes and doing it right!days of our livesI didn't do the traditional here. They had a young wife (Chanel) who wasn't in love with two brothers, but with brothers... Allie and Johnny. In this sexually fluid story, it was a breath of fresh air to give new meaning to the word "triangle" on a soap opera.

WORST TRIANGLE

Brooke/Ridge/Taylor - The Bold and the Beautiful

Watching the three characters play table tennis was pure frustration for longtime viewersThe brave and the pretty. While bringing Krista Allen to BOLD as the new Taylor was a brilliant casting decision, for months we had doubts as to whether or not Taylor would bring Ridge back. However, nothing is clean and up-to-date. With so much cheating on the part of Taylor's sons and Ridge being a complete jerk, we prayed for this whole triangle to stop. I hope so for now as Brooke and Taylor are best friends now and have cut Ridge out of their lives.

AGAIN THE BEST 'GRAT-TO-TE-TO' OF THE DAY

Trevor John Street - Tucker McCall - The Young and the Restless

We love TSJ and Y&R had the hit of the year, releasing the once-loved bad boy fromto live a lifeto CBS Daytime as remastered by Tucker McCall. St. John is such a great actor that his scenes seem effortless and we think viewers should give him a chance and allow him to play the character in 2023 without having any preconceived notions about what the role was like before or after has played.

CHARACTERS WHO DESERVE THE BIGGEST BITCH SLAPS

Steffy und Thomas Forrester - The Bold and the Beautiful

There were weeks we wished Brooke Logan Forrester could have slapped Steffy and Thomas in Timbuktu! How many nasty, manipulative conversations could these siblings have about how they would do anything to bring their parents, Taylor, and Ridge together? We thought Steffy was a hero, which made her antics even more confusing! Luckily, she ended up denouncing the semblance of a Taylor and Ridge wedding ceremony and revealed that Thomas called CPS on himself, not Brooke.

BEST INDEPENDENT SERIOUS

General Hospital Episode 15,000

While there haven't been that many standalone soap opera episodes this year, GH has brought us the milestone of 15,000 episodes centered around Laura Collins and featuring the entire cast. With the dedication of veterinarians and the incredible genius Francis, the deep history of this show is always special to remember.

WORST RELATIONSHIP

Leo Stark and Craig Wesley - Days of Our Lives

While we commend DAYS for delving into the story of a middle-aged man coming out and finding love in a same-sex relationship, the often comedic antics made it hard to root for Craig and Leo at times. , and especially because Leo proved ambiguous from the start.

BEST LINE IN HISTORY

Finn Lives - The Brave and the Beautiful

This story worked on many levels. At first it was a shock! Sheila shot her own son and then his wife. Then, after everyone believes Finn has died, along with his adoptive mother Li's odd behavior, it is revealed months later that Finn is actually alive. The story got even more interesting from there as Sheila tried to keep her birth son locked away while he recovered from his injuries so he couldn't escape and reunite with his wife Steffy. Eventually, Steffy and Finn reunite in Monte Carlo and the story closes.

THE WORST STORY

Elizabeth Webber's Mental Torment and Past - General Hospital

This story was so complicated when it should have been a showcase for Rebecca Herbst. First we put Liz in a "fugue state"... then we see her having some flashbacks at the top of a staircase... later still we see a woman being pushed down the stairs. As the story developed, she brought Liz's parents, Jeff and Carolyn Webber, into play. Liz visits her childhood home after decades, only to find out that Jeff had an affair with Finn's wife, Reiko, while she was working at the school.Doctors Without Borders.It is revealed that Liz found out about this and got into an argument with Reiko, who fell down the stairs and later died in the hospital. This all seemed to have more to do with creating a rift between Finn and Liz than Liz's past. It was also concerning that Carolyn used hypnosis tactics on her own daughter to trick her into blacking out the entire event.

SECOND CHAMPIONSHIP:

Billy's Podcast - The Young and the Restless

That just doesn't work on a daytime soap, or at least not the way Y&R did. They loaded the phenomenal Jason Thompson with a story where he speaks into a microphone. The show tried to speed up the story several times, notably when Billy used a pseudonym to expose Genoa City's weak points, and it still didn't work. Give Thompson something better, please.

The Case of Ashland Locke - The Young and the Restless

As we noted above, so much airtime was devoted to Victoria and Ashland's relationship and society's game of cat and mouse that no one could care less about the ending. It was as if the Ashland Locke character had taken over the show for months. Mind you, it was nice to see Robert Newman again after Richard Burgis left, but this story was so boring. The kicker was that Nick "killed" the guy and we never heard from him again.

PLOT TWIST BUT ABSURD

Sheila und Bill forman una alianza – The Bold and the Beautiful

From spoilers to 2023, this might be a ruse, but if you go outside of what aired the last week of 2022, Dollar Bill is on the dark side defending Sheila Carter and threatening to sue Taylor for shooting her years ago when Steffy and Finn file charges and try to put Sheila behind bars. OKURR, understood? What makes this so absurd is that Bill previously helped Finn reunite with Steffy and helped Li defeat Sheila who was holding Finn captive. you will know

Quinn rides his bike to Carter and Paris' wedding - The Bold and the Beautiful

It sounded so ridiculous. Are we to believe that Quinn will hop on a bike off the promenade in Venice or wherever, take a ride, and be there in time to crash Carter's wedding in Paris? Well, somehow the bike got her there, and she made it. This is not what we would call good use of a remote location session.
